Over the semester I've been collecting some terms I've encountered and that could potentially be used for this assignment. Some examples are: ephemeral port range, ICMP packets, Load balancing, CGI bin, and more. But at the same time I've found myself more interested in looking into one of the following topics:
- Network sovereignty — in terms of how they came to be, but also which countries hold the power over each region of the Regional Internet Registries, what kind of power do they have and what happens when certain countries within those regions exert their own network rules that coincide with that (and what, if any at all, power do the people have over the way their local networks operate?).
- Spectrum allocation — I think it would be interesting to look into how allocation of radio wave bandwidth came to be, the bodies that govern and decide on the regulations, possible issues with it and differences in the way it's being handled in different regions in the world though I might need to just focus on the US. My interest in this stems from a more general fascination of electromagnetic waves, which I see as somewhat of a natural resource humanity has harnessed for its use. While it's not exactly finite in quantity (at least as long as the sun is shining?) it is finite in its bandwidth and range etc, which I find interesting because it makes us have to decide on "rules of play" and enforce it.
