Week #01

Design Frameworks: topic

I have several vague topics for a project, but the interest lies in mostly the same places. I've found myself mostly thinking about mechanisms I'd like to employ, like using real-time data to create something from which a "new thing" would emerge. I think generally speaking, my interest lies in uncovering something that otherwise would remain hidden from us. Wether it is something that emerges through collaborative efforts of willing participants, data-visualization or some kind of a monitoring device.

Sat down with a big piece of paper to write down my different directions. Some are actual ideas, some are just thoughts or questions, not in any particular order. These are meant to serve as prompts for myself. They are things I'd like to consider, things from which this project could perhaps grow?

Emergence

It's a pretty broad topic, and I should probably get more specific but I'm still exploring and don't want things to feel forced. I'm also not sure what's possible, or what makes sense for me in terms of my abilities and my personal connection to the topic — the readings for this week made me feel more strongly about this too. But I do know I'm interested in devising a set of rules, or a mechanism of some sort that will produce something I have no full control of, that is driven either by real-time data or by others.

Within that topic I'd possibly be interested in looking into one of the following:

  1. language patterns: either between different languages, or looking at how we intuitively construct languages.
  2. Migration: considering looking at human migration in comparison to animal migration. But also raising questions about power, humanity, history.
  3. Decision-making: I have a lot–maybe too much–to say about this and I will if I and up choosing this topic...
  4. Electromagnetic waves: possibly either visualizing, monitoring, intercepting — turning these invisible forces to something that we can feel and be aware of. Either pointing to surveillance techniques, or to EM waves as a natural resource or as a naturally occurring property of things that are considered completely artificial.
